METAS – Your reference.
The Federal Institute of Metrology METAS serves as the federal centre of competence for all issues related to measurement and for measuring equipment and measuring procedures. It is the Swiss national metrology institute. As such, its mandate is to ensure the availability in Switzerland of measurement and testing facilities with the degree of accuracy needed to meet the requirements of the economy, research and administration.
What is metrology?
Metrology is the science of measurement. It deals with the definition and application of units of measurement as well as with the accuracy and comparability of measurements in science, industry and everyday life.
The term “metrology” was coined in the 18th century from Greek: “metron” means measure, “-logia” means teaching or science. The earliest known evidence dates back to 1780 and has been attributed to the French scholar, Alexis-Jean-Pierre Paucton.
