Designated institutes of METAS

METAS works with specialised institutes for certain measurands. These designated institutes complement the nation’s measurement expertise and strengthen the international recognition of Swiss metrology.

Role of the designated institutes

As Switzerland’s national metrology institute, METAS provides traceable and internationally recognised units of measurement. International comparisons ensure their traceability and, together with the partner institutes, create the basis for a uniform metrology system in Switzerland.

For measurands outside of our direct remit, designated institutes take over responsibility for certain measurement and calibration tasks. This makes efficient use of existing infrastructure and expertise. The designated institutes have proven their expertise within the framework of the international agreement on mutual recognition of measuring standards and calibration certificates (CIPM MRA).

• Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos/World Radiation Centrer (PMOD/WRC), Davos
  Designated for the measurand "solar irradiance" (radiometry).
• Institut de radiophysique IRA, Lausanne
  Designated for the measurand "activity of radionuclides" (radioactivity).
• Paul Scherrer Institute PSI, Villigen
  Radiation Protection and Safety Department. Designated for the measurand "neutron fluence" (neutron metrology).
