Fuel and propellant analysis includes the measurement of marker concentrations in heating oils, the classification of hydrocarbons according to the harmonised system (HS) and the determination of fuels’ biogenicity.

Our services in the field of fuel and propellant analysis

We offer a wide range of services in different areas. The most important are listed below.

“Heating oil” service

Since heating oil is taxed at a lower rate than diesel, a fiscal marker is added to it. Since 2024, butoxybenzene (BPE) has gradually replaced the current active ingredient Solvent Yellow 124 (SY124). In our laboratory, we analyse the marker content (BPE and SY124) accurately and reliably and check whether your heating oil is properly labelled in accordance with the Mineral Oil Tax Ordinance (MinOTO).

“Biofuels” service

Biogenic fuels and propellants are playing an increasingly important role in the reduction of greenhouse gases, the energy transition and strengthening energy security. Certified biofuels also benefit from tax breaks. Our laboratory determines key metrics such as biogenicity, filterability limit (CFPP) and biodiesel content with the utmost accuracy.

“HS code for hydrocarbon mixtures” service

The correct classification of hydrocarbon mixtures according to the harmonised system (HS code) places high demands on analytics. With our many years of experience and state-of-the-art investigation methods, we support you by precisely measuring the boiling curve and other relevant parameters, among other things.

Measuring methods and technologies

We apply validated and controlled analytical methods, including accredited methods, such as:

  • Liquid scintillation counters (LSCs)
  • Gas chromatography (GCxGC-MS/FID, GC-MS/FID in liquid injection mode or in headspace mode)
  • High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Atmospheric distillation units for determining the distillation range
  • Titration
  • Flash point testers
  • Ubbelohde viscometers
