Legally regulated measuring instruments are subject to strict requirements to ensure reliable results.
Measuring instruments are regulated by law in Switzerland if
- the measuring instruments are used in the areas of trade and business, human and animal health, environmental protection, public safety or official determination of facts, and
- the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) has regulated the measuring instruments in an ordinance
Measuring instrument-specific ordinances
The measuring instrument-specific ordinances of the FDJP govern the requirements for the specific measuring instrument, the procedures for placing the measuring instrument on the market and the procedures for maintaining the measurement stability of the measuring instrument.
Placing measuring instruments on the market
Legally regulated measuring instruments are placed on the market via a conformity assessment procedure or national approval and initial verification. The applicable procedures are defined in the measuring instrument-specific ordinances of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).
Inspecting measuring instruments
METAS and the cantonal enforcement authorities are responsible for inspecting legally regulated measuring instruments used in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. The aim is to ensure that measuring instruments have the necessary measurement reliability and quality and meet the legal requirements.
