Measurement networks
Measurement networks provide real-time data for the sustainable development of Switzerland. From recording and intelligent analysis to operating the systems, we provide valid data for effective water protection.
Measurement networks in everyday life
Measurement networks automatically collect environmental data. They provide continuous real-time measurements and thus create the basis for the evaluation, analysis and publication of hydrological, hydrogeological and hydrochemical data.
With its measurement networks, METAS provides the technical foundation and validated data for monitoring Swiss waters and the necessary monitoring programmes. Measurement networks make it possible to assess the quantitative and qualitative status of water bodies in Switzerland as well as the effects of climate change on groundwater and surface waters.
They also enable hydrological and hydrogeological information and forecasts, thus forming the basis for flood warnings and information in the event of drought.
Typical applications of measurement networks
Measurement networks are used for data collection in the environmental sector. Possible areas of application are:
- Hydrological measurement networks for water protection
- Water regulation
- Environmental and climate monitoring
Our services in the field of measurement networks
Working on behalf of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), we operate and maintain Switzerland’s hydrological measurement network and monitor the quality and quantity of surface and groundwater. We support over 300 measuring stations and ensure reliable operation and high data quality.
We collect and process measurement data and control automated sampling. The use of industry standards results in robust and cost-effective measurement systems. Decentralised data collection, transmission, visualisation and data verification ensure high quality environmental data and form the basis for informed decisions in the field of hydrology.
Our interdisciplinary team develops and supports measurement and sampling systems and offers integrated solutions from installation to data acquisition and monitoring.
Design, installation and construction
We take care of the design, (electrical) installation and construction of measurement networks. Among other things, we manufacture special parts for this purpose.
Operation, maintenance and servicing
We monitor all measuring stations remotely in real time and rectify faults on site to ensure the smooth operation of the measurement networks.
Sampling and comparative measurements
We provide the following services at our two locations in Bern and Bellinzona:
- Water sampling and comparative measurements
- Analyses of water samples in analytical chemistry laboratories
- Calibration of sensors in the field
- Operation of a dynamic database for storing and archiving the measurement data
- Web visualization of measurement and service data
Measuring methods and technologies
The following technologies are used in the field of measurement networks:
- SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for monitoring the measurement networks in real time
- Digital inventory and service documentation system
- Logging systems (mains operation and autonomous) for measurement data acquisition and transmission
Quality and expertise
You can find information on the quality of our services on the “Integrated Management System” page.
