Our vision
METAS is the benchmark for metrology in Switzerland.
Our vision is to be the central point of contact for measurements, measuring instruments and measuring procedures and to set the highest international standards in metrology.
Our mission
As the Swiss Confederation’s Competence Centre for Metrology, we guarantee the accuracy, traceability and comparability of measurements in Switzerland. We ensure that measurements meet the highest scientific, technical and international standards.
In doing so, we create the basis for innovation, security, fair trade and trust in everyday life.

Interplay of the fields of activity and values of METAS.
To implement the overall strategy of the Federal Institute of Metrology METAS, METAS is pursuing three sub-strategies. This ensures that our actions are sustainable, effective and based on a long-term strategy.
- Customer relationship and partnership: We strengthen long-term, trusting customer relationships and develop cooperative partnerships for society and with industry, administration and research. Through ongoing dialogue with our stakeholders, we ensure that our services are appropriate, transparent and effective.
- Cost-effectiveness and sustainability: We use our resources responsibly, efficiently and sustainably. Economic action is a key prerequisite for safeguarding our services in the long term and for reliably fulfilling METAS’s legal mandate.
- Research and innovation: We promote innovation and conduct application-oriented research, in order to identify and address new metrological requirements at an early stage. In doing so, we lay the foundations for technological development, scientific excellence and international comparability.

International recognition and metrological traceability
In order for our calibrations and measurements to be internationally recognised, various requirements must be met. These include, in particular, metrological traceability to the International System of Units (SI) and a recognised quality management system.
