VOC analysis: Analysis of volatile organic compounds

VOC analysis helps companies to determine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in products and to correctly declare them in accordance with the VOC Ordinance (OVOC).

VOC analysis in everyday life

The quantity of volatile organic compounds (VOC) subject to importation into Switzerland must be stated for products containing more than 3% by mass of VOC. The aim is to protect people and the environment from the harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Not all products and substances are affected: only the VOCs and products listed in the positive lists of the VOC Ordinance (Appendices 1 and 2) are subject to the levy (CHF 3 per kg of VOC). The exact provisions are set out in the Ordinance on the Incentive Tax on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCV).

VOC analysis helps importers avoid incorrect declarations and the associated fines. It is also important for exporters to know the exact content of taxable VOC in their products, as they can apply for a refund of the VOC levy – as long as the refund amount is at least CHF 300.

Based on documents such as the product composition or the safety data sheet, we first check whether your product is subject to the VOC levy. If this information is not available, we determine the VOC content using product-specific laboratory analyses.

Measuring methods and technologies

We apply validated and controlled analytical methods, including accredited methods, such as:

  • Gas chromatograph processes (GC-MS, GC-FID in liquid injection mode or in headspace mode)
  • Karl Fischer titration for determining water content
  • Halogen dryer for determining the content of volatile compounds
  • Atmospheric distillation units for determining the distillation range
