Measuring air velocity

Air velocity influences the functioning of ventilation systems, flight safety and meteorological measurements. METAS calibrates anemometers in its wind tunnel and guarantees reliable measurements for industry, research and safety-relevant applications.

Measuring air velocity in everyday life

Air velocity measurements are used to control ventilation systems, make meteorological observations and emission measurements, and to assess wind conditions in aviation and sports.

Air flows are influenced by temperature, pressure and other ambient conditions. In order to guarantee reliable measurement results under these challenging conditions, METAS calibrates measuring instruments that are designed to determine air velocity.

Typical applications of air velocity measurement

Air velocity measurement is relevant to various fields:

  • Building and ventilation technology: for controlling indoor air quality, optimising energy efficiency and measuring comfort
  • Aviation: for navigation, flight safety, wind tunnels and runways
  • Energy generation: for wind turbines and power plant chimneys
  • Science and research: for meteorology, fluid mechanics and environmental monitoring
  • Industry and manufacturing: for clean rooms and drying processes
  • Sports and leisure: for shooting, archery and sailing

Our services in the field of air velocity

In the field of air velocity, we calibrate various types of anemometers in the range of 0.1 to 40 m/s, including:

  • Hot wire anemometer
  • Vane anemometer
  • Ultrasonic anemometer
  • Pitot probes

Measuring methods and technologies

We use the following measuring equipment and reference equipment for the calibration of anemometers:

  • Wind tunnel with a test section of 75 cm x 40 cm
  • Reference anemometer (vane anemometer or pitot probe) as secondary standard
