Measurement of electrical energy
Electrical energy is constantly measured in everyday life. METAS ensures that these measurements are reliable, so that electricity consumption can be recorded correctly and billed fairly.

Measuring electrical energy in everyday life
Whether in private households or in industry: electricity meters are used where electricity consumption is measured. Electricity meters must function correctly so that the electrical energy consumed can be billed correctly. METAS ensures that these measurements are reliable by testing the devices and ensuring comparable results throughout Switzerland.
Typical applications for measuring electrical energy
- Measuring electricity consumption in private households
- Measuring electricity consumption in industry
- Measurement of energy by reference devices used by other laboratories
Our services in the field of electrical energy
We provide calibration and testing services in the following areas:
- Electrical energy and power
- High voltage
- High current
- Quality of care
- Mains operation (e.g. Phasor Measurement Units, PMU)
Calibrations
In the field of electrical energy and power, we calibrate all types of electricity meters, including state-of-the-art smart meters. We also calibrate reference power meters for manufacturers and other laboratories to ensure the traceability of the electricity meter to the SI unit.
Where high voltage and high current are concerned, we calibrate instrument transformers based on various technologies. We also calibrate transducers and output loads that other laboratories use to calibrate instrument transformers.
In the area of quality of supply, we calibrate calibrators that are used in various laboratories to generate test signals in accordance with various standards.
Design tests, approvals and conformity assessments
We carry out:
- Type tests;
- National approvals in accordance with the Measuring Instruments Ordinance;
- Conformity assessments of measuring instruments in cooperation with the notified body METAS-Cert.
In the case of type examinations, the laboratory as an independent body checks whether a measuring instrument meets the requirements of the applicable standards and ordinance. Based on this, conformity assessments or approvals are carried out.
Where supply quality is concerned, the laboratory carries out type tests of power quality analysers in accordance with the standards IEC 61000-4-30 and IEC 62586-2.
Supporting electricity verification laboratories in Switzerland
Together with the Supervision and Subsequent Inspection division, we support the electricity verification laboratories in Switzerland. In this way, we help ensure that electricity or power is billed correctly in order to protect consumers and ensure fair trade.
