METAS-Cert – conformity assessment and certification for measuring instruments in Switzerland

METAS-Cert is the METAS Certification Body recognised by Switzerland, the EU and the UK. We test, certify and inspect measuring instruments and intelligent measuring systems in accordance with legal requirements, standards and customer requirements.

METAS-Cert at a glance

METAS‑Cert is the METAS Certification Body. METAS‑Cert is designated by Switzerland and recognised by the EU, the UK and OIML for carrying out these legally prescribed conformity assessments for measuring instruments.

For manufacturers, this means: METAS‑Cert tests, certifies and confirms that measuring instruments meet all legal requirements and can therefore be placed on the market.

In addition, METAS‑Cert offers further services in the area of private law, including assessments, expert opinions, certifications and inspections. These are based on international standards or customer-specific requirements.

Conformity assessment of measuring instruments (CE, CH, UKCA)

We carry out conformity assessments for the placing on the market of measuring instruments in the EU, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. To that end, we support manufacturers in complying with all legal requirements and in the corresponding labelling.

Conformity assessment for the EU (CE)

For the EU market, we carry out conformity assessments in accordance with the Measuring Instruments Directive (2014/32/EU, MID) and the Directive on Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (2014/31/EU). The CE marking is the basis for placing a product on the market in the EU single market.

National conformity assessment (CH)

For the Swiss market, we offer conformity assessments in accordance with Swiss law. The CH marking confirms conformity with the Measuring Instruments Ordinance and is a prerequisite for placing a product on the market in Switzerland.

Conformity assessments for Great Britian (UKCA)

For Great Britain, we conduct conformity assessments in accordance with the Measuring Instruments Regulations 2016 and Non-automatic Weighing Instruments Regulations 2016. The UKCA label is the basis for placing a product on the British market.

Registration for conformity assessment

We carry out the entire conformity assessment process in accordance with legally defined guidelines. We provide the following documents for registration:

Modules

The following modules are described in the guidelines for placing measuring instruments on the market:

  • Module A2 (Internal production control)
  • Module B (Type examination)
  • Module D or D1 (Quality assurance of production process)
  • Module E or E1 (Instrument quality assurance)
  • Module F or F1 (Product verification)
  • Module F: Weighing instruments (Product verification)
  • Module G (Unit verification)
  • Module H or H1 (Full quality assurance)

Basics for conformity assessments

Data security checks for smart metering systems

We check the data security of smart metering systems on the basis of the Electricity Supply Ordinance and national IT security requirements. We coordinate the entire testing process. Accredited testing laboratories carry out the technical tests. We take care of the final certification.

Logging in to the data security examination

We do not carry out the technical data security examinations ourselves, but work together with external, accredited test laboratories. Manufacturers of smart metering systems (applicants) define the test laboratory at the time of registration. The Guidelines for data security examination define the requirements for testing laboratories and the testing process:

Placing measuring instruments on the market

Legally regulated measuring instruments are placed on the market via a conformity assessment procedure or national approval and initial verification. The applicable procedures are defined in the measuring instrument-specific ordinances of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP).

Service

Conformity assessments of measuring instruments

Conformity assessments of measuring instruments by the Certification Body METAS-Cert ensure that your measuring instruments are put on the market in compliance with the law and that they are internationally recognised. In Switzerland and the EU, they are a prerequisite for market access for many measuring instruments.

The climate chamber in our laboratories enables us to simulate certain climatic conditions in order to certify the watches.

Service

Watch certification

Our watch certification service confirms the highest precision and reliability of mechanical Swiss-made watches. Models that pass all the tests are awarded Master Chronometer certification. METAS-Cert also carries out other certifications for watches and movements in accordance with existing standards and specific requirements.
