Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) ensures that electrical devices function fault-free. METAS supports industry, laboratories and authorities with the calibration of measuring instruments and with accurate EMC measurements.

Electromagnetic compatibility in everyday life
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) means that a device functions reliably in its electromagnetic environment without interfering with other devices. In order to limit emissions and increase the immunity of electrical equipment, electromagnetic fields must be measured reliably.
Typical applications of measuring electromagnetic compatibility
Electromagnetic compatibility is applicable to all electrical and electronic products. It ensures that devices and technical systems (e.g. in aircraft) and radio services (e.g. those of the fire brigade) function correctly.
Our services in the field of electromagnetic compatibility
Our services include the provision of reference values for the measurement of electromagnetic radiation and the assessment of the EMC conformity of measuring instruments. We support testing and calibration laboratories as well as authorities with a wide range of services.
Calibrations
We calibrate radiation measuring equipment and measuring equipment for determining electromagnetic fields:
- Antennas
- Field probes
- Current clamps
- Coupling-decoupling networks
- Absorbing clamps and injection clamps
- EMC measurement environments (e.g. chambers)
- Shunts for pulse measurements
EMC tests
We offer full EMC tests with a focus on the measuring instruments and test the following aspects:
- Emission: Measurement of how much electromagnetic interference a device causes
- Immunity according to the requirements for industry, households or vehicles: Measuring how resistant a device is to interference
Proficiency testing and measurement comparisons
We offer suitability tests and organise comparative measurements and in the area of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in accordance with ISO 17043. Specifically, measurement comparisons are carried out to ensure measurement quality in the following activities:
- EMC tests using appropriate measuring instruments, focusing on conducted and radiated emissions as well as immunity;
- Calibration of EMC measuring equipment (e.g. pulse generators).

METAS has developed special testing devices for the following interlaboratory tests:

Calibration
Our calibrations are based on nationally and internationally traceable references and guarantee the highest measurement accuracy and traceability to the International System of Units (SI) for measuring instruments from industry, research and administration.
Testing of measuring instruments
METAS tests ensure the accuracy, reliability and conformity of your measuring instruments. We carry out independent tests of measuring instruments, systems and methods, as well as of chemical properties, in accordance with national and international requirements.
