METAS’s integrated management system (IMS) lays the foundation for us to fulfil our legal mandate reliably, securely and efficiently. It links all central management areas and helps us to systematically manage quality, safety and risks.
The IMS as a control tool
We operate an integrated management system that controls all business processes. With the help of this management tool, we ensure:
- Transparent and traceable processes thanks to clear structures and clearly defined responsibilities
- Excellent quality in all our services as a reliable standard
- Continuous further development of our quality standards through consistently closed control loops
- Compliance with all normative and legal requirements as well as other relevant specifications
Systemic elements of the IMS
METAS’s IMS was developed based on the ISO 9001 standard and combines several systems in a holistic approach:
- Quality management: Systematic management and further development of processes in order to guarantee excellent quality over the long term and to sustainably increase stakeholder satisfaction
- Environmental management: Consideration of fundamental environmental aspects in the responsible operation of our organisation
- Occupational health and safety: Employee protection through preventive measures and safe working conditions
- Information security management: Ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of sensitive information
- Risk management and business continuity management: Holistic management of risks and ensuring operability in the event of an incident
- Compliance management: Compliance with legal, regulatory and internal requirements
Continuous improvement of the IMS
Our IMS is regularly reviewed and further developed. Peer reviews by other national metrology institutes, internal audits, management assessments and other external evaluations help us identify potential for improvement and continuously optimise our processes.
International recognition of the IMS
Our integrated management system is not certified according to ISO 9001 but is recognised in the international metrological environment. As part of EURAMET, METAS is subject to regular peer reviews in which specialists from other national metrology institutes assess our system and processes. This specific form of external review ensures that our quality standards meet international requirements and are trusted around the world.

Damit unsere Kalibrierungen und Messungen international anerkannt sind, müssen verschiedene Voraussetzungen erfüllt sein. Dazu gehören insbesondere die metrologische Rückführbarkeit auf das Internationale Einheitensystem (SI) sowie ein anerkanntes Qualitätsmanagementsystem.
